Since its construction by imperial Japan in 1936, the Janghang smelter stood at the heart of non-ferrous metal refining, playing its part in industrialization. The black smoke billowing from its towering chimney reached for the clouds and came back down with the rain, striking the surrounding soil with a relentless toxicity that wounded those who tread upon the earth. As we stand here today, in a present that relegates modernization to a distant past, I find myself aching over the photographs of spirits we had to let go to reach this point—aching as I look at you. With each passing wave, the bruises of sea and land grew more vivid, and when the tragedy that pierced your heart was handed back to you in the form of a meager sum of compensation, what expression did your face wear? I can only imagine it through the faint scars left scattered somewhere, fragments of a pain that still lingers.
