"The Plateau" (2024) is an evolution of the artist’s previous work, Sleeper (2023), exploring the interplay of vertical and horizontal elements in a quest for harmony across different axes. In the artist's practice, the vertical axis, which connects the sky and the earth, symbolizes ascent and growth, while the horizontal axis, extending across the ground, represents balance and coexistence. The project’s title, Plateau, refers to a raised flat expanse of land, where these vertical and horizontal ideas converge into a unified physical space. By repositioning railroad ties—typically functional in a horizontal plane—into a vertical stance, and by laying vertical wooden pillars horizontally, the artist reinterprets these elements through the lens of a plateau. For Minhoon Kim, these gestures act as a symbolic disruption of the comfort found in socially prescribed roles, offering a sculptural practice to envision alternative futures and new forms of harmony.
